Blackcats baseball week 3 roundup

Blackcat Dayton Trip is safe at second in a Mar. 29 game at Goreville against Elgin's Westminster Christian high school. The Warriors tallied a run in the top of the first, but Goreville tied it with a run in the bottom of the frame. Shon Messmer was hit by a pitch, stole second, then scored on a base hit to left field by Dayton Tripp.

March 31 vs. Carterville
The baseball Blackcats picked up a 4-2 win over Carterville last Saturday at Goreville. Junior Dayton Tripp pitched the complete game for the victory.
The Cats were ahead 1-0 after three innings. They made it 3-0 with two runs in the bottom of the fourth. Blake Gray opened the frame with a base hit to center field. He scored on a double to right center by Alex Andros, who was thrown out trying to advance to third base. Nate Webb followed with an infield hit and Clayboy Shadowens singled to left. Caleb Miles then drove Webb in with a base hit to left center.

Goreville added a run in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI double by Gray. Carterville scored twice in the top of the sixth, but the Cats held on for the win. Goreville had a total of eight hits and committed two errors.

Top hitters for Goreville: Andros 2-3 (RBI); Gray 2-3 (RBI); Messmer 1-3 (RBI); Miles 1-2 (RBI); Shadowens 2-3.

Next on the schedule for Goreville: this Wednesday home vs. Seneca; Thursday at Elverado; Saturday home vs. Pinckneyville (10 a.m.); next Tuesday at Hamilton County.

March 27 vs. Shawnee
The Blackcats lost to visiting Shawnee on Tuesday of last week, by the score of 7-6. Alex Andros took the loss on the mound for Goreville.
The Cats trailed 7-0 when they rallied with three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. They added three more in the bottom of the seventh, but could get no closer.

Blake Gray 2-4 (HR, 3 RBIs) and Dayton Tripp 2-4 were the top hitters for Goreville.

March 29 vs. Elgin-Westminster Christian
Goreville won an exciting 10 inning contest over Elgin-Westminster Christian last Thursday at Goreville, by the score of 7-6. Alex Andros drove in the game winning run in the bottom of the tenth inning for the victory. Andros also picked up the win on the mound as he came on in relief of starter Nate Webb in the top of the seventh inning.

Clayboy Shadowens prepares to steal second at the bottom of the 8th and Elgin (Westminster Christian) High school is ahead by two Thursday evening, March 29, at the Goreville High School. The Blackcats managed to tie the game again taking it into a tenth-inning overtime where the Blackcats won the game 7-6 while hanging on with two outs.

The Warriors tallied a run in the top of the first, but Goreville tied it with a run in the bottom of the frame. Shon Messmer was hit by a pitch, stole second, then scored on a base hit to left field by Dayton Tripp. Elgin went ahead 2-1 in the third before the Cats once again tied it in the fourth on an RBI line drive to right by Caleb Belcher.

The score remained 2-2 until Elgin added a run in the sixth inning and another in the seventh to take a 4-2 lead. Goreville scored twice in their half of the seventh to tie it (4-4) and send the game to extra innings. Messmer drew a walk, then advanced to third on an errant pick-off attempt by the Warriors. Tripp also walked before a ground out by Andros scored Messmer. Webb then beat out an infield hit to bring in Tripp.

It was still 4-4 when Elgin came up with two runs in the top of the tenth to put them ahead 6-4. With one out in the bottom of the inning, Clayboy Shadowens walked. After Jake Clark struck out, Belcher hit a hard grounder that got past the Warrior’s third baseman, to bring in a run. Messmer drove in another run with a single to right. Tripp followed with a base hit, and Blake Gray drew a walk, setting the stage for Andros’ line drive to end the game.
