Lady Cats defeat Milledgeville, advance to State Championship

Posted June 1, 2012 by Joe Rehana in Sports

Goreville’s Lady Blackcats held off Milledgeville 1-0 at the IHSA Softball State Tournament 1A Semifinals in East Peoria Friday afternoon. Goreville freshman pitcher Sydnee Rushing (22-4) only allowed four hits to the Milledgeville Missiles’ Emily Bush’s two.

In the top of the third, Taylor Odom slugged one of the two hits on the Missiles as she homered to left field and put up the game’s lone score. Odom increased her IHSA state season record for home runs in a single season to 23.

The team will face the Payson Indians Saturday at noon in Peoria for the state title.  The Indians defeated Tuscola High School 1-0 earlier in the day with an RBI in the bottom of the 7th.

The IHSA website reported more than 600 spectators for the game.  Photos from the game would later reveal that the bleachers were full of fans wearing black and yellow as Goreville fans traveled to Peoria to support their team.  Monster Radio AM 1150 WGGH carried a live broadcast over the air and provided a live stream [recorded and available below] of the Goreville/Milledgeville game.  The IHSA’s website carried a live video feed.

Fans found ways to find scores and keep an up-to-the-minute account of the action.

For Blackcat fans without access to a computer or AM radio or a seat at the game, text messages filled the gap, especially for this Blackcat fan who was out of town and armed only with a cell phone at game time.  A stream of text messages from a true, black-and-yellow bleeding fan of the Blackcats, Robin Harper-Whitehead, brought the game to life in glorious text-message format and kept its recipients on the edge of their seats until the final out.

The messages had a handful or more of other followers and as the game neared its end, with tensions high, the texts arrived minute-by-minute and eventually, with much enthusiasm, revealed Goreville’s victory and a collective sigh of relief.

The Lady Cats continue to move the records forward with this most recent victory and highlighted in an article Thursday by  Pete Spitler, a Southern Illinoisan sports reporter, for several team members, arriving to Saturday’s playoff game has been something of a long time coming.  Spitler writes:

Specifically, it is the story of a group of players (Shelbey Miller, Alison Webb, Brittney Pritchett and Haley Darnell) that has been the core of all four Goreville teams that have advanced to the super-sectional game in basketball and softball over the past two years.

And finally won one on Monday.

There’s an old saying that in order to appreciate absolute victory, one must first experience disappointment. Two trips to Salem’s B.E. Gum Gym for basketball and another to Johnston City for softball resulted in the same cold, hard feeling of regret and a long bus ride home empty-handed.

But from the very beginning of softball season, you could sense something was different. While expected to do well, the Blackcats won nine of their first 10 games, including beating Class 2A power Carterville, 13-4, to open the campaign.

Word of the Lady Cats’ victory Friday in Peoria was quickly shared on the social networks with several photo galleries of the game arriving to Facebook before nightfall.

Here is how the game unfolded for a lucky few, as it did for this fan, arriving with an East Coast time stamp with much anticipation:

12:40 pm :: OK, this is a test. Remember to not respond back due to the fact that everyone get it. Sunny. But cool.
12:45 pm :: Www.ihsa.tv also

A live video stream of game was to be made available at this web address.

Everyone appears excited for the game to begin.

Two replies of Yayyyyyyy!!! are made and then for no apparent reason, one last text arrives:

2:22 pm :: Strike 2

The Goreville Gazette and The Vienna Times congratulate the Lady Cats on such an incredible season and wish them well in Saturday’s State Championship game.
