The Goreville Village Board recently ended its Christmas lights contest saying that a tightening of the Village’s budget coupled with the difficulty of operating the contest helped push the decision to a vote. Goreville residents were praised at the board meeting for their enthusiasm and dedication to providing seasonal displays each year that the Village said only made things more difficult in selecting an individual winner. The board did not leave it off the table to return the contest in the future, but said it would need to work on a method of involving more of the community in choosing its winners. Goreville Mayor Larry Vaughn said short of sounding like a cliche’ said, “I think we all win when Goreville residents work together to bring the community a little notoriety as it has with its well-lit displays each Christmas.” Hundreds of homes throughout Goreville are decorated to celebrate the Christmas holiday this year and Vaughn said he encourages everyone to head out and take a look.
