Junior High Lady Cats fall to Johnston City

Last Monday night, the Goreville junior high girl’s basketball team lost a road contest at Johnston City, by the score of 40-22. The defeat was just the second of the year for the Junior Lady Cats, and puts their season record at 19-2. Goreville trailed 14-9 at the half before Johnston City outscored the Junior Lady Cats 18-9 in the third quarter to take a 32-18 lead into the final frame, and they held on for the win.

Scoring for Goreville: Messmer-10; Luke-6; Elms-3; Jones-2; M. Schuetz-1.

Johnston City won the JV contest 38-31.

On Wednesday of last week, the Junior Lady Cats breezed to a 52-12 win at Pope County. Goreville had an 11-4 lead after the first quarter that they extended to 27-4 at halftime, and they stayed in control the rest of the way. Luke (12), Jones (10), and Messmer(10) all hit double figures for the Junior Lady Cats. Darnell (9), Elms (7), Herren (2), and M. Schuetz (2) rounded out the scoring for Goreville.

Goreville’s JV squad also won, 37-7.

Goreville will play its final regular season game on Monday, Jan. 7, at home vs. Jefferson, on eighth grade recognition night. The regional tournament is set to begin on Tuesday and will conclude on the following Tuesday (Jan. 15), with the state tournament scheduled to start on Friday.
