Lady Cats defeat Vienna, improve to 7-0

The Goreville High School girl’s basketball team boosted its record to 7-0 with a 74-57 home win over Vienna last Monday.  The Lady Blackcats built a big, early lead, then held off Vienna’s second half come-back bid for the victory.

Goreville had a 14-6 lead with 3:20 left in the first quarter. From there, Brittney Pritchett hit a three-pointer to start the Lady Cats on an 18-0 run that carried over to early in the second period.  Pritchett and Jessica Wright each scored six points to lead the spurt, while Alison Webb had four points and Taylor Odom added a bucket on a put-back of an offensive rebound. The Lady Eagles then ran off five straight points to trail 32-11, but Goreville answered with a 6-0 run to make it 38-11 about halfway through the frame. The Lady Cats led 47-20 at the half.

Vienna outscored the Lady Cats 21-11 in the third quarter to narrow the gap to 58-41 by the start of the fourth period. The Lady Eagles then reeled off the first six points of the final frame to get within 58-47 at the 6:11 mark. However, Goreville responded with three-pointers by Allison Sullivan and Pritchett, and a lay-up by Wright to push their lead to 66-47. Vienna could get no closer than 15 points the rest of the way.  Jessica Wright led five Lady Cats in double figures with 17 points. Vienna’s Maranda Chance topped all scorers with 24 points.

Vienna won the JV contest 18-12.

Up next for Goreville: Thursday (Dec. 6) home vs. Woodlawn; Saturday home vs. Chester.  Both games tip-off at 6:15 p.m.

On Thursday of last week, the Lady Blackcats used a big third quarter to break open a close game on their way to a 91-62 win at Zeigler-Royalton-Christopher. Goreville had a 38-33 lead at halftime, then outscored the Lady Tornadoes 26-15 in the third frame to take control, 64-48, heading into the fourth period.  Haley Darnell led five Lady Cats in double figures with 19 points. Z-R-C’s Brandy Mifflin topped all scorers with 28 points.

Last Saturday, the Lady Cats picked up a 53-50 win at Herrin to improve their record to 6-0. Goreville had an 18-11 lead after the first quarter. The Lady Tigers came back to get within 27-24 at halftime, then tied it at 40-40 by the end of the third period. The Lady Blackcats outscored Herrin 13-10 in the final frame for the victory.

Alison Webb scored 19 points to lead Goreville, while Herrin’s Tori Johnson was the game’s high scorer with 20 points.
