Blackcats start Winter Classic tourney with win
On Monday night, the Goreville High School boys’ basketball team picked up a 64-49 win over Johnston City in opening round play at the West Frankfort Mid-Winter Classic tournament. The Blackcats were ahead 17-15 at the end of the first quarter, then steadily increased their lead to a 43-35 margin by the start of the fourth period. Alex Andros paced Goreville with 15 points. Johnston City’s Austin McPheron had 18 points to take game high scorer honors.

The Blackcats continue tourney play on Friday vs. Anna-Jonesboro at 7:30 p.m. The final round contests begin on Saturday at 4 p.m., with the title game scheduled to tip-off at 8:30 p.m.
In last week’s action, the Blackcats defeated Sesser-Valier in a BDC contest at Goreville on Tuesday by the score of 67-42.
The Red Devils held a 10-9 lead about halfway through the first quarter before Zeke Snell scored two quick buckets to put Goreville ahead 13-10. After an S-V three pointer tied it at 13, Blake Gray came up with a steal and lay-up, Snell hit two free throws and scored inside, and J.T. Russell made two free tosses. Dayton Tripp capped the 11-0 run with a three pointer to give the Cats a 24-13 lead. They led 24-15 at the end of the period. The Blackcats took control in the second quarter as their defense held S-V to three points. Goreville opened the frame with an 8-0 spurt with scoring by Kyefer Cavins, Snell, Caleb Belcher and Alex Andros, to push its lead to 32-15. Following a three point play by the Red Devils, Garrett Patterson hit a three to start the Cats on another 8-0 run. Blake Gray then made three free throws and Belcher hit a jumper at the buzzer to give Goreville a 40-18 halftime lead.
The Cats maintained a comfortable margin throughout the second half, with their biggest lead (61-31) coming with 6:11 left in the fourth quarter on two free throws by Tripp.
J.T. Russell and Zeke Snell each tallied 16 points to lead Goreville, while S-V’s Derek Hood took game high scorer honors with 18 points.

Last Friday, Goreville picked up a 57-49 win at Christopher to improve its season record to 11-3. The Blackcats’ 23-16 halftime lead grew to 41-29 at the end of the third quarter and the Cats held on for the win. Dayton Tripp led all scorers with 20 points, Christopher’s Mercks had 17 points for the Bearcats.
