Lady Cats defeat Chester, remain undefeated

The Goreville High School girls’ basketball squad remained unbeaten with an 81-32 win over Chester last Monday night at Goreville. The Lady Cats season record now stands at 17-0. Up next for Goreville is a home contest with Sesser-Valier on Wednesday, then a road game at Elverado on Thursday. The Lady Cats will be playing in the Eldorado Lady Eagle Winter Classic tournament, with their first game set for Saturday at 2:30 p.m. vs. Gallatin County. The tourney concludes on Saturday (Jan. 19) with final round games beginning at 1 p.m. and the championship contest scheduled to tip-off at 7 p.m.

Against Chester, the Lady Blackcats jumped out to a 33-7 first quarter lead and never looked back.  Alison Webb tallied a game high 18 points to lead four Lady Cats in double figures.

Anna-Jonesboro Wildcats fall to Goreville Lady Cats

In action last Thursday (Jan. 3), the Lady Cats notched a 66-41 non-conference win at Anna-Jonesboro. A-J led 16-15 after the first quarter before Goreville outscored the Lady Wildcats 14-7 in the second period to take a 29-23 lead into halftime. The Lady Blackcats were in control 45-33 at the start of the final frame, then used a 21 point fourth quarter to seal the win. Alison Webb scored 19 points for Goreville, while A-J’s Kim Mixen also tallied 19 points to share game high scorer honors.

Lady Cats wrap up Benton Christmas Classic

On Saturday night, Dec. 29, the Lady Blackcats completed a sweep of the field at the Benton Rangerette Christmas Classic tournament, by defeating host Benton, 50-38. The win gave Goreville back to back tourney titles and improved the Lady Cats’ season record to 15-0.

Benton had jumped out to a 16-9 lead after one quarter of play, but the Lady Cats rallied to trail by one (23-22) at the half. Goreville used a big third quarter, outscoring the Rangerettes 19-7, to take a 41-30 lead into the fourth period, then stayed in control the rest of the way for the win. Haley Darnell was the game’s high scorer with 15 points, while Allison Sullivan also hit double figures with 12 points. Cali Carney led Benton with 12 points.

In Saturday morning’s fourth round tournament action, Goreville beat Trico 69-27. The Lady Cats had a 24-11 first quarter lead that they extended to 44-18 at the half. Alison Webb led all scorers with 21 points, while Katelyn Thies had 14 points for Trico.

Goreville picked up a 74-49 win over Hamilton County in its second round tourney contest on Friday morning. Brittney Pritchett took game high scorer honors with 26 points. The Lady Foxes were led by Alicia York, who scored 17 points.

In the Friday night session, the Lady Cats defeated Anna-Jonesboro by the score of 63-45. Goreville led 33-21 at halftime, then increased the margin to 48-31 by the start of the fourth quarter. Alison Webb’s 16 points led Goreville, while A-J’s Kim Mixen topped all scorers with 22 points.
