Lady Cats narrowly defeated at Eldorado tournament

Last Saturday, the Goreville High School girl’s basketball team lost to Mt. Carmel in the championship game at the Eldorado Winter Classic tournament, by the score of 73-64.  The Lady Cats were ahead at the start of the fourth quarter, but Mt. Carmel rallied for the win.  Goreville completed tourney play with a 4-1 mark and now has a 23-1 season record.  Haley Darnell, Brittney Pritchett, and Alison Webb were named to the all-tournament team.  Goreville next hosts Zeigler-Royalton this Thursday (Jan. 24) at 6:15 p.m. and Trico on Saturday at 11:00 a.m., before traveling to Sesser-Valier on Monday.

Against Mt. Carmel, the Lady Cats had a 16-13 lead after the first quarter.  Brittney Pritchett opened the second period with a three pointer to push Goreville’s lead to 19-13.  She scored 11 points in the quarter and hit six three pointers for the game.  Goreville took its biggest lead of the game (32-24) at the 4:05 mark after an Allison Sullivan jumper and another three by Pritchett.  The Lady Aces closed the gap to 37-34 at the half.

Goreville was ahead 43-36 with five minutes left in the third quarter before Mt. Carmel went on a 6-0 run to get within 43-42.  The Lady Cats answered with lay-ups by Jessica Wright and Sullivan, and a three point play by Taylor Odom, extending Goreville’s lead to 50-42.  They had a 52-46 edge going into the fourth quarter.  The Lady Aces opened the final frame with a 10-0 spurt, giving them a 56-52 lead with 4:49 left to play.  Odom then put back an offensive rebound and Pritchett hit her sixth three pointer to put Goreville ahead 57-56.  With 2:52 left in the game, Mt. Carmel had regained the lead at 62-59.  Another stick-back by Odom made it 62-61, but from there, the Lady Aces finished the game with an 11-3 run for the victory.

Brittney Pritchett led Goreville with 20 points.  Mt. Carmel’s Tyra Buss scored 54 points to take game high scorer honors.

Lady Cats defeat Vienna

In second round tourney play last Wednesday, the Lady Cats defeated Vienna, 71-54.  Goreville led 36-27 at halftime before the Lady Eagles trimmed the margin to 49-42 at the end of the third quarter.  Goreville came up with a strong fourth period, outscoring Vienna 22-12, to seal the win.  Alison Webb paced Goreville with 18 points.  Vienna’s Carley Childress was the game high scorer with 23 points.

Lady Cats defeat Fairfield

On Thursday night, the Lady Blackcats picked up a win over Fairfield in third round action, by the score of 67-31.  Goreville was ahead 28-8 after the first period, then pushed its lead to 45-12 at the half, and the Lady Cats remained in control the rest of the way.  Haley Darnell led all scorers with 22 points, while Alyssa Kollak scored nine points for the Lady Mules.

Lady Cats defeat Eldorado

In fourth round action last Friday, the Lady Cats improved their tourney record to 4-0 with a 59-40 victory over host Eldorado.  The win put Goreville into Saturday’s title contest against Mt. Carmel.  The Lady Cats held a 12-7 lead at the end of the opening quarter.  They extended the margin to 25-13 at the half and had a 45-29 advantage at the start of the fourth period.  Allison Sullivan topped all scorers with 17 points, including four three-pointers.  Eldorado’s Taylor Goodley had 15 points to lead the Lady Eagles.
