Lady Cats win over Gallatin at Eldorado Winter Classic

Last Saturday, the Goreville High School girls’ basketball team opened play at the Eldorado Winter Classic tournament with a 74-32 win over Gallatin County.  The Lady Cats took control early as they led 31-1 after the first quarter. Haley Darnell scored a game high 18 points for Goreville, while Sidney Ahrens paced the Lady Hawks with 12 points.

Scoring for Goreville: Darnell-18; A. Webb-17; Pritchett-13; Sullivan-9; Odom-8; Wright-7; Massey-2.

The Lady Cats continue tourney play this week with games on Wednesday vs. Vienna at 6:30 p.m.; Thursday vs. Fairfield at 6:30 p.m.; Friday vs. Eldorado at 7 p.m. The final round contests begin at 1 p.m. on Saturday, with the championship game set for 7 p.m.

Goreville defeated Sesser-Valier-Waltonville, 61-51, in a key BDC game last Wednesday at Goreville.  With the win, the Lady Cats remained unbeaten on the season, improving their record to 18-0. It was the first conference loss for the Lady Red Devils.  Goreville had a 15-10 lead after the first period before S-V-W narrowed the gap to 26-24 at halftime. Goreville was ahead 44-40 at the end of the third quarter, then outscored S-V-W 17-11 in the final frame to seal the victory. Alison Webb led Goreville with 17 points, while S-V-W’s Chelsea Miller topped all scorers with 20 points.

Last Thursday, the Lady Cats cruised to a 74-44 win at Elverado. Goreville jumped out to a 21-9 first quarter lead and stayed in control the rest of the way.  Taylor Odom scored a game high 21 points to lead the Lady Cats, while Elverado’s Rawson had 10 points for Elverado.
