Blackcats claim BDC West title second year in a row

Last Saturday, the Goreville High School boys’ basketball team won its second consecutive BDC West conference title with a 69-51 victory at Chester.  The Blackcats were unbeaten in conference play with a 12-0 record and have a 24-4 season mark entering the Zeigler-Royalton regional, where they are the top seed.  Goreville plays Cobden on Wednesday (Feb. 20) at 7:30 p.m.  A win in that game will put the Blackcats into Friday night’s championship contest at 7:30 p.m.  The winner of the Z-R regional moves into the Hardin County sectional at Elizabethtown for a match-up with the winner of the Meridian regional, next Tuesday (Feb. 26) at 7:30 p.m.

Against Chester, J.T. Russell scored 11 of his game high 24 points in the first quarter to help the Blackcats take a 22-10 lead at the end of the period.  Goreville was ahead 40-27 at halftime and remained in control (51-37) heading into the fourth quarter.  J.T. Russell’s 24 points topped all scorers, while Chester was led by Jake Lochhead with 20 points.

80-39 win over Elverado

On Tuesday of last week, the Blackcats celebrated Senior Night with an 80-39 win over visiting Elverado.  The victory improved Goreville’s season record to 23-4 (11-0 conference).  Goreville took control early as they were ahead 29-8 after the first quarter, then pushed their lead to 50-13 at the half.  Nick Dunn hit five three-pointers to lead Goreville with 15 points.  Elverado’s Sarensen took game high scorer honors with 21 points.
