Blackcats claim regional title, most wins at 26-4

The Goreville Blackcats defeated Zeigler-Royalton 75-43 to win the 2013 Illinois High School Sports Association Regional Tournament.  The 2012-13 Blackcats also claimed a new record with the most wins in the program’s history with their 26-4 record.  The Cats played Meridian on Tuesday night in the first round of the IHSA Sectional Tournament held in Hardin County.

The Goreville Blackcats defeated Zeigler-Royalton 75-43 to win the 2013 Illinois High School Sports Association Regional Tournament. The 2012-13 Blackcats also claimed a new record with the most wins in the program’s history with their 26-4 record. The Cats played Meridian on Tuesday night in the first round of the IHSA Sectional Tournament held in Hardin County.

Last Saturday, the Goreville High School boys’ basketball team won the Zeigler-Royalton Class 1A regional championship by defeating the host Tornadoes, 75-43.  The victory moved the Blackcats into the Hardin County sectional, where they were to play Meridian on Tuesday night.  A win in that contest puts Goreville into the sectional title game on Friday March 1, at 7:30 p.m.  The winner of the Hardin County sectional will advance to the Carbondale (SIU) supersectional where they will play the winner of the Altamont sectional on Tuesday March 5, at 6:00 p.m.

Against Z-R, the Blackcats were ahead 26-12 at the half. They used a big third quarter, outscoring the Tornadoes 33-16, to take command 59-28 heading into the fourth quarter.  Zeke Snell topped all scorers with 21 points, while Z-R was led by Nick McPhail, who scored 19 points.

The Blackcats earned a place in the Z-R regional championship game with an 83-49 win over Cobden on Wednesday of last week.Goreville had an 18-10 first quarter lead that they pushed to 38-18 by halftime and the Blackcats stayed in control the rest of the way.  Zeke Snell took game high scorer honors with 19 points. Cobden’s Chapman scored 17 points to lead the Appleknockers.
