Blackcat Kyefer Cavins goes up for two but is blocked by Meridian as Goreville finished its season with a 77-65 loss in the semi-finals of the Hardin County sectional.

The season ended for the Goreville High School boys’ basketball team on Tuesday of last week as the Blackcats lost to Meridian, 77-65, in the semi-finals of the Hardin County sectional.  Goreville finished a fine season with a 26-5 record.

Meridian had an 11-7 lead with about three minutes left in the first quarter before Zeke Snell hit a jumper, Dayton Tripp made a lay-up and Snell scored again to put Goreville ahead 13-11.  A bucket by Snell off a nice assist from Tripp tied it up, 15-15, at the end of the period.  The Blackcats had a 29-28 lead at the half.

After Meridian scored to open the third quarter, Snell hit another jumper, Alex Andros put back an offensive rebound and J.T. Russell made a lay-up.  A drive by Kyefer Cavins capped the 8-0 run, giving Goreville a 37-30 lead with 6:25 left in the period.  Andros scored after another offensive rebound, then added a pair of free throws to give the Blackcats their biggest lead of the night, 47-36, at the 2:34 mark.  From there, Meridian went on a 13-0 run that carried over into the fourth quarter, putting the Bobcats ahead 49-47 with 7:16 left to play.

Following a score by Snell and a Meridian free throw, Andros completed a three point play to give Goreville its last lead of the game, 52-50.  Meridian answered with an 8-0 spurt to take a 58-52 lead with just under four minutes left in the game.  With 2:13 remaining, a bucket by Cavins got Goreville within four (64-60), but the Blackcats could get no closer the rest of the way.  Zeke Snell led Goreville with 19 points, while Meridian’s Joshua Jones topped all scorers with 24 points.

Scoring for Goreville: Snell-19; Andros-13; Cavins-13; Russell-9; Tripp-8; Gray-3.
