Blackcats come from behind to win over Seneca

The Goreville High School baseball team notched a 7-5 win over Seneca on Wednesday of last week.  The Blackcats held a 1-0 lead until Seneca scored five runs in the top of the fourth inning.  Goreville tied it (5-5) with four runs in the bottom of the fifth, then scored a pair of runs in the sixth for the win.

Dayton Tripp started on the mound for Goreville.  He was relieved by Nathan Smith in the fifth inning, and Alex Andros, who picked up the win, in the sixth.  Andros also had two hits, including a home run, and drove in four runs.

Other top hitters for Goreville: Smith 3-3 (RBI); Tripp 1-3 (RBI); Gray 1-3; Messmer 2-4 (HR, RBI).

On the next day, the Blackcats lost at West Frankfort, by the score of 11-9.  Goreville scored twice in the top of the first before the Redbirds tallied five runs in the bottom of the frame.  They added three more runs in the second inning, pushing their lead to 8-2.  The Blackcats closed the gap to 8-6 with a four run third inning and the score remained that until West Frankfort plated three runs in the sixth inning, increasing its lead to 11-6.  Goreville rallied with three runs in the top of the seventh but could get no closer.

Blake Gray was the starting pitcher for the Blackcats and took the loss.  Shon Messmer came on in relief in the third inning.  Caleb Belcher, Blake Gray, and Shon Messmer each had two hits to lead Goreville.

Next on the schedule for the Blackcats: Thursday (Apr. 4) home vs. Elverado at 11:00 a.m.; Friday at Shawnee; Saturday at Pinckneyville for a double-header starting at 10:00 a.m.; Monday (Apr. 8) home vs. Gallatin County at 4:30; Tuesday home vs. Hamilton County at 4:30.
