Blackcats defeat Trico

April 22 at Marion

The Goreville High School baseball team lost at Marion, 2-1, in a non-conference contest on Monday.  The loss puts the Blackcats season record at 9-7.

Goreville took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third when Shon Messmer singled to drive in Jared Vaughn.  Marion scored both of its runs in the bottom of the fourth on a two-run double.

Nathan Smith was the starting pitcher and took the loss.  Dayton Tripp came on in relief in the fifth inning and Alex Andros relieved him in the sixth.  Caleb Belcher, Shon Messmer, Nathan Smith and Dayton Tripp each had one of Goreville’s four hits for the game.

The Blackcats are on the road for their next three games: Wednesday (April 24) at Egyptian; Thursday at Vienna; next Monday at Herrin.  All games are scheduled to start at 4:30 p.m.

April 16 vs. Trico

On Tuesday of last week, the Blackcats defeated Trico by the score of 5-4, in BDC action at Goreville.  Goreville was ahead 3-0 through five innings after scoring single runs in the second, fourth, and fifth frames.  The Pioneers grabbed the lead with four runs in the top of the sixth, but Goreville answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning for the win.  The Blackcats had nine hits and committed one error.

Dayton Tripp started on the mound for Goreville.  He was relieved by Alex Andros, who picked up the win, in the sixth inning.
