Lady Cats fall to Marion at home, season stands at 7-4

Last Monday, the Goreville High School softball team lost to Marion 5-1, in a non-conference contest played at Goreville.  The defeat gives the Lady Blackcats a 7-4 season record.

Goreville scored its only run of the game in the bottom of the third inning on an RBI base hit by McKenzie Schaede.

They held Marion scoreless until the top of the sixth when the Lady Wildcats tallied all five of their runs.  Haley Darnell had two hits for the Lady Blackcats, while Schaede and Kayla Webb had one hit each.  Sydnee Rushing, who took the loss in the circle, pitched the entire game and recorded 11 strikeouts. Goreville committed no errors in the contest.

Goreville is next scheduled to play Wednesday (April 17) at A-J; Thursday at Johnston City; Friday and Saturday at the O’Fallon tournament.

The Lady Blackcats return home for three games next week: Monday vs. Galatia; Tuesday vs. Z-R; Wednesday vs. Benton, with all games set to start at 4:30 p.m.

April 9 vs. Hamilton County

In last week’s action, the Lady Blackcats defeated visiting Hamilton County on Tuesday, by the score of 12-4.

Goreville scored four runs in its first at-bat, then added four more in the second inning.

The Lady Foxes scored twice in the top of the third before Goreville plated another run in the bottom of the inning to make the Lady Cats’ lead 9-2.

Hamilton County tallied single runs in the fourth and fifth innings, while Goreville closed out the scoring with three runs in the bottom of the fifth.

Brittney Pritchett started in the circle for Goreville and picked up the win.  She was relieved by Sydnee Rushing in the sixth inning.  The Lady Blackcats had 16 hits and committed one miscue.  Taylor Odom had a big day with four hits, a home run, and five RBIs.  Haley Darnell also had four hits and drove in a run and Brittney Pritchett went 3-4 with an RBI.

April 11 at Cobden

Last Thursday, the Lady Blackcats notched a road win at Cobden as they shut-out the Lady Appleknockers 16-0.

Goreville tallied four runs in the top of the first, nine more in a big third inning, then made the final margin with three runs in the fifth.  They had 16 hits for the game and were aided by six Cobden errors.

Sydnee Rushing was the starting pitcher and notched the win. Brittney Pritchett came on in relief in the fourth inning.

Top hitters for Goreville: Darnell 1-3 (2 RBI); Odom 1-3 (2 RBI); Rushing 1-1 (RBI); A. Webb 1-3 (RBI); K. Webb 2-3 (2 RBI).

April 12 vs. Carterville

On the next day, the Lady Blackcats lost 6-4 to Carterville in a game played at John A. Logan College.

The Lady Lions scored a run in the top of the first inning and another in the third.  They added two more runs in the sixth, pushing their lead to 4-0 before Goreville tied it with four runs in the bottom of the inning.  Carterville scored twice in the top of the seventh for the win.

Sydnee Rushing pitched the complete game and took the loss. The Lady Blackcats had six hits and committed four errors.
