Blackcats fall to Cobden at Regional championship

May 18 vs. Cobden (regional championship)

The season ended for the Goreville High School baseball team with a 6-5, 10 inning loss to Cobden last Saturday in the championship game of the Steeleville Class 1A regional tournament.

After three innings, Goreville had a 2-0 lead that held up until the Appleknockers scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth. Cobden added two more runs in the sixth to open up a 5-2 margin.  The Blackcats tied it (5-5) with three runs in the top of the seventh. Cobden won the game in the bottom of the tenth inning when a sacrifice fly to centerfield scored a runner from third to end the game.

Alex Andros started on the mound and was relieved by Dayton Tripp, who took the loss, in the fifth inning.  Caleb Belcher had a hit and two RBI’s and Shon Messmer had a pair of hits for Goreville.

The Blackcats finish their season with an 18-10 record.

May 16 vs. Elverado

Goreville advanced to the Steeleville regional title contest with a 7-2, semi-final victory over Elverado  last Thursday. The win moved the Blackcats into a match-up with Cobden for the championship on Saturday.

Elverado plated a pair of runs in the top of the first inning.  The score stayed 2-0 until Goreville tied it with two runs in the bottom of the fourth.  The Blackcats scored five runs in their half of the sixth inning to make the final margin.

Nathan Smith started on the mound and picked up the win.  Dayton Tripp relieved him in the seventh inning.

Top hitters for Goreville: Belcher 1-3 (2 RBI); Gray 2-3; Miles 2-3 (RBI); Vaughn 2-3 (RBI).

May 14 vs. Pope County

The Blackcats closed out their regular season on Tuesday of last week with a 13-0 home win over Pope County.

Goreville got off to a fast start as they scored 10 runs in the bottom of the first inning.  The Blackcats made the final margin with three runs in the second frame.  Blake Gray had a triple and drove in three runs, Caleb Miles had a pair of hits, and Dayton Tripp went 3-3 with two RBI’s to lead Goreville.

Dayton Tripp was the starting pitcher and notched the win.  Nathan Smith relieved him in the fourth inning.  The two pitchers combined to hold the Pirates without a hit for the game.
