Goreville hosts 9th Annual Invitational Track Meet

Grade school track teams from throughout Johnson County competed Monday afternoon under sunny skies in Goreville at the 9th Annual Goreville Invitational Track Meet.

Goreville led the day taking home first place for both boys and girls overall scores with Lick Creek placing second in girl’s overall and New Simpson Hill placing second in boy’s overall.  New Simpson Hill also claimed third place in the girl’s overall competition with Cypress placing third overall in the boy’s.
Grades 4 through 6 competed against one another in track and field events held at Goreville Village Park with a fun run ending the day’s challenges. The events were divided into boy and girl matches with one co-ed relay.

Competition began with the softball throw and moved on to the long jump, the shot put, the 75, 100, 200 and 400-meter runs, the 400-meter relay, the 400-meter co-ed relay and the 800-meter run.

Two records were broken Monday with New Simpson Hill fourth grader Farnsworth taking first place in the boy’s softball throw and breaking the record set in 2008 with his 135 feet 9 inch toss; and Dongola fifth grader Snell took first place in the boy’s long jump setting a new record of 14 feet 5 inches.
