The Goreville Blackcats Varsity Volleyball team’s roster may read like a junior varsity team with its lack of seniors and only three juniors, but its commitment and performance Monday night in its opening game reads “All Varsity.”

The Lady Cats opened their season Monday night against Sesser-Valier at home losing by the two-point threshold in the third match after maintaining the lead for most of the game.

Head coach Stephanie Oldham said the team has a lot to learn as it is a young team without a lot of practice under its belt.

“We played against juniors and seniors [tonight],” Oldham said after the game.  “We’re a young team; I’m starting two freshmen, a sophomore and three juniors, so we’re all back next year and we’re going to be tough.”

This is Oldham’s first year as head coach after working as assistant coach for former coach Abbey Fischer and said this year was about rebuilding for the road ahead.

The team is only returning four players and bringing onboard nine new players with two who have never played the game before.  Monday night the team was as close to winning as it gets with each side trading the lead in the final moments of the game.

“I can’t ask for any better,” Oldham said.  “The girls gave 110 percent tonight.  I’m real excited; this made me feel really good going in, so we’re ready.”

The Lady Cats are on the road for their second game, which is scheduled for Thursday night against Galatia High School with a game time of 6:15 p.m.
