Blackcats narrowly defeat Eagles in Pink Out match

Last Monday night, the Goreville High School volleyball squad defeated Vienna in a close match at Goreville in three sets, 24-26, 25-19, 25-23.

In the opening set, the Lady Blackcats built a 14-6 lead before Vienna steadily came back to get within 21-20. Goreville then pushed its lead to 24-21, but from there, the Lady Eagles ran off five straight points for the win. Vienna jumped out to an early lead in the second set, however, the Lady Blackcats rallied to tie it at 16-16, then outscored Vienna 9-3 the rest of the way. The third set saw Goreville open up a 16-9 advantage before the Lady Eagles came back to tie it at 20-20. Vienna took a 23-21 lead, but Goreville ended the set on a 4-0 run, with Cheyenne Reynolds serving up an ace and McKenzi Schaede getting a kill being the key plays to win the match.

In last week’s action, the Lady Blackcats notched their second win of the season on Tuesday night with a 25-17, 25-20 victory at Cobden. Cheyenne Reynolds and McKenzi Schaede each had a pair of aces and combined for 15 kills. Last Thursday, Goreville lost in two sets to visiting Trico, 25-14, 25-11.

Up next for the Lady Blackcats: Wednesday (Sept. 18) at Elverado; Thursday home vs. Chester; Saturday at Crab Orchard tournament.
