Eagles crush Falcons 46-0
By Mike McGinnis
After a slow start, the Vienna-Goreville High School football team rolled to a 46-0 victory over Elverado-Trico last Saturday at Vienna. With the win, the Eagles improved their record to 3-2.
V-G went on a 59 yard drive on its first possession with Connor Seavers scoring on a two yard run at the 2:19 mark of the opening quarter. Austyn Frassato kicked the PAT to give the Eagles a 7-0 lead. Kyefer Cavins scored V-G’s second touchdown when he returned a Falcon punt 70 yards with 1:56 left in the second quarter. Frassato’s extra point kick gave the Eagles a 14-0 halftime lead.
V-G made it 22-0 with 5:14 remaining in the third period on a 63 yard touchdown scamper around left end by Cavins and a two point conversion run by Tylour Daubert. Two minutes later, Cavins made another nice punt return, covering 26 yards, giving V-G good field position at the Falcon’s 24. A run by Cavins put the ball at the nine and on the next play he ran it in from there for his third touchdown of the game. Daubert again ran for the conversion, putting the Eagles ahead 30-0.
Early in the fourth quarter, Elverado-Trico appeared headed for a score when they moved down to the V-G nine yard line, but Daubert intercepted a fourth down pass and returned it 92 yards for a touchdown. An Austin Krelo to Zeke Snell pass for the two point conversion made it 38-0. The Eagles closed out the scoring with 5:17 left in the game when after three straight runs by Quin Colson gave V-G a first down at its own 19, Alec Gold broke loose for an 81 yard touchdown run. Zachary Kolb ran for the extra points to make the final 46-0 margin.
V-G had set a goal of holding the Falcons scoreless and head coach Mike Rude commented after the game that “we accomplished what we needed to do.” He added that “it was a great job by everybody.” He also noted that the Eagles’ four remaining games would be much tougher contests than Saturday’s victory.
V-G rushed for 343 yards with Connor Seavers (111 yards) and Kyefer Cavins (89 yards) leading the way. The varsity squad will travel to Sesser this Friday (Oct. 4) for a match-up with Sesser-Valier-Waltonville-Woodlawn. Kick-off is set for 7 p.m. The freshman team will host S-V-W-W this Thursday (Oct. 3) at 4:30 p.m., while the sophomores will play S-V-W-W next Monday (Oct. 7) at Vienna, also at 4:30 p.m.
