The Goreville Junior High Blackcats baseball team defeated Red Bud 12-4 Tuesday afternoon in the semi-final round at the Class M State Baseball Tournament held at the Perry County Fairgrounds in Pinckneyville. The Blackcats will face Nashville, who defeated North Clay 12-1, in the state finals Thursday at 3 p.m. in Pinckneyville.

“We played a good game with the team hitting really well today,” Coach Eric Messmer said.

On Saturday the Blackcats defeated Pinckneyville 10-1 to get to Tuesday’s semi-final game. Goreville Junior High students were in attendance Tuesday and cheered on their team to victory.

“We had good pitching on the mound with Brodie Lenon pitching four innings and Peyton Geyman pitching three,” Messmer said. “This is the first time I’ve had a team go this far in the state tournament, but I think they went this far before back in 2001.” Coach Messmer said that the team was in good spirits on their way back to Goreville Tuesday evening and that they are looking forward to the final on Thursday.
