Goreville competes at Sesser-Valier Holiday Tournament

Dec. 26 vs. Waltonville

In opening round action at the Sesser-Valier Holiday Tournament last Thursday, the Goreville High School boys basketball team defeated Waltonville by the score of 46-43.  The Spartans were ahead 24-21 at the half and they led 37-35 after three quarters.  The Blackcats then outscored Waltonville 11-6 in the fourth period to pull out the win.  Goreville’s Kyefer Cavins was the game’s high scorer with 16 points.  Waltonville was led by Hunter Coggins, Justin Winchester, and Austin Zahm, who scored 12 points each.

Scoring for Goreville: Cavins-16; Snell-13; Lanham-8; Melot-5; Messmer-2; Seavers-2.

Dec. 27 vs. Christopher

The Blackcats improved their tourney record to 2-0 on Friday with a thrilling, 79-74, triple overtime victory over Christopher.  Goreville got off to a fast start, taking a 19-9 lead after the first quarter, but Christopher rallied in the second period to grab a 27-26 halftime lead.  The Bearcats opened the third quarter with a 4-0 run to push their lead to 31-26.  Goreville battled back to tie it at 44-44 heading into the fourth period.  Christopher led 50-46 at the 5:06 mark but Kyefer Cavins hit a pair of free throws and Zeke Snell putback an offensive rebound to tie it at 50-50.  The Bearcats were ahead 55-53 with 11 seconds left and had a chance to add to their lead, but they missed the first free throw of a one-and one.  With two seconds left, Goreville’s Daniel Lanham hit a clutch 15 footer to tie it at 55-55, sending the game into overtime.

Both teams scored five points in the first overtime to send the game into a second extra session tied at 60-60.  Cavins hit two of his 24 free throws with 31 seconds left to give the Blackcats a 66-63 lead, but Christopher’s Jacob Towers hit a three-pointer at the buzzer to force a third overtime.  The Bearcats went ahead 70-68 on two free throws at the 3:26 mark, but that was their last lead of the game.  Daniel Madden hit two key baseline jumpers to give Goreville a 72-70 lead and from there, Cavins hit six free throws to seal the victory.  Kyefer Cavins topped all scorers with 28 points, while Christopher was led by Jacob Towers, who scored 27 points.

Scoring for Goreville: Cavins-28; Snell-22; Lanham-10; Messmer-10; Madden-7; Melot-1; Vaughn-1.

Dec. 28 vs. Woodlawn

The Blackcats lost to Woodlawn, 69-64, in their third round contest on Saturday.  The loss puts Goreville’s tourney record at 2-1.  The Blackcats were to play Sesser-Valier on Monday night for third place.

Goreville led 17-8 after the first quarter and held a 33-26 edge at the half.  However, the Cardinals rallied in the second half to pull out the win.  Goreville’s Zeke Snell was the game’s top scorer with 21 points.  Kyefer Cavins (20 points) and Daniel Lanham (16 points) also hit double figures, while Shon Messmer had seven  points to round out the scoring for Goreville.  Jayson Hapeman scored 18 points to lead Woodlawn.
