The Goreville Junior High boy’s basketball team kept its fans on the edge of their seats Saturday as they went head-to-head against top seeded Meridian and beat them 76-74 in overtime to claim the Southern Illini Conference Basketball Tournament Championship title.

Blackcats’ coach Eric Messmer said teamwork and consistency led to the win with individual performances hard to ignore.

“Team defense was excellent,” Messmer said, “And Webb was unstoppable.”

Braden Webb set a new Goreville Junior High School record by scoring a total of 50 points with four from behind the three-point line.

This is the Junior Cats third conference title in a row and their fifth in six years as the Cats are now 15-1 on the season with their only loss coming from Meridian earlier in December.

“This was a great win for the Junior Blackcats,” Messmer said. “Morgan Bishop did an awesome defensive job in the second half and Dunn and Massey rebounded and controlled their Bigs in the post. Geyman made a big three pointer in the second quarter and Massey took two charges.”

Scoring for the Blackcats: Webb 50 pts, 4 threes, 16 two’s and 6 of 7 freethrows; Massey 10 pts; Geyman 8 pts; Dunn 6 pts and Bishop 2.
