Lady Cats win two, lose two at Benton Tourney

Dec. 27

The Goreville High School girls basketball team lost to Carterville, 71-51, in their first round game at the Benton Rangerette Classic Tournament last Friday.  The Lady Blackcats held a 31-28 halftime lead before Carterville took a 45-42 lead at the end of the third quarter.  The Lady Lions outscored Goreville 26-9 in the final frame for the win.  Haley Darnell led Goreville with 27 points, while Carterville’s Sidney Smith scored 31 points to lead all scorers.

In Friday’s second round contest, Goreville lost to Hamilton County, by the score of 67-41.  Goreville trailed 26-20 at halftime.  Hamilton County pushed its lead to 47-30 heading into the fourth quarter and they stayed in control the rest of the way.  Haley Darnell had 21 points to pace Goreville.  She shared game high scorer honors with Hamilton County’s Alicia York, who also scored 21 points.

Dec. 28

The Lady Blackcats returned to the win column on Saturday with a pair of victories.  In their first contest, Goreville defeated Marion, 53-52, in overtime.  The Lady Blackcats were ahead 27-20 at the half before Marion rallied to tie it at 48-48 at the end of the fourth quarter, forcing an extra session.  Goreville outscored the Lady Wildcats 5-4 in the overtime for the win.  Haley Darnell paced Goreville with 19 points, while Marion’s Alyson Gwaltney led all scorers with 23 points.

The Lady Blackcats beat Trico in Saturday’s second game, by the score of 66-35.  Goreville used a big second half to seal the win.  Haley Darnell was the game’s high scorer with 23 points.  Trico was led by Prange, who scored 11 points

The Lady Blackcats were to play Benton in their final tourney contest on Monday night.
