Blackcats edged out of third place at West Frankfort

In Saturday’s third place contest at the West Frankfort Mid-Winter Classic, the Goreville High School boys’ basketball team lost to the host Redbirds, by the score of 67-62. Goreville’s Zeke Snell scored his 1000th career point and was named tournament MVP. Goreville’s Kyefer Cavins was chosen for the all-tournament team.

West Frankfort opened up a 20-6 first quarter lead before the Blackcats battled back to take the lead, 31-29 at halftime. The Redbirds regained the lead 49-45 heading into the fourth period and they stayed in control the rest of the way. Goreville’s Zeke Snell topped all scorers with 27 points. West Frankfort was led by Christian Dunning, who scored 21 points.

Scoring for Goreville: Snell-27; Cavins-23; Bishop-4; Messmer-4; J. Vaughn-3; Melot-1.

In tourney action on Tuesday of last week, Goreville lost to Herrin, 64-63, when the Tigers scored with five seconds left in the game to pull out the win. Goreville got out to a 23-16 first period lead and was ahead 32-27 at halftime. Herrin had gotten within one, 43-42, by the start of the fourth quarter. Zeke Snell was the game’s high scorer with 23 points, while Josh Haynes led Herrin with 21 points.

Scoring for Goreville: Snell-23; Cavins-15; Messmer-10; Lanham-9; Madden-6.

Last Friday night, Goreville defeated Anna-Jonesboro, 78-67, to move into the tourney’s third place contest. A-J got out to a 22-16 first quarter lead, but the Blackcats came back to grab the lead, 36-34, at the half. Goreville outscored the Wildcats 19-14 in the third period to push its lead to 55-48 heading into the fourth quarter and they held on for the win. Goreville’s Kyefer Cavins was the game’s high scorer with 29 points. A-J was led by Ben McFarland, who scored 25 points.
