Blackcats hold on for win over Indians at West Frankfort Mid-Winter Classic

Last Monday, the Goreville High School boys’ basketball team picked up a 76-72 win over Johnston City at the West Frankfort Mid-Winter Classic.  The tournament will conclude with pool play on Saturday.

The Indians had a 20-19 first period lead that they pushed to 37-32 at the half.  Johnston City was ahead 56-50 going into the fourth quarter but Goreville rallied, outscoring the Indians 26-16 in the final frame to pull out the win.  Zeke Snell scored a game high 27 points, while Johnston City was led by Hunter Zeigler, who scored 18 points.

Scoring for Goreville: Snell-27; Cavins-19; Lanham-11; Messmer-10; Melot-6; Bishop-2; Vaughn-1.

On Tuesday of last week, the Blackcats, lost a road contest at Sesser-Valier, by the score of 66-60.  S-V held a 22-14 lead after the first quarter and 53-41 at the end of the third period.  The Blackcats rallied in the final period, but S-V held on for the win.  Zeke Snell had 21 points to lead the Blackcats, while S-V’s Nick Marlo was the game’s top scorer with 22 points.

Last Friday, the Blackcats defeated Christopher 86-74 on homecoming night at Goreville.  Goreville was ahead 33-28 at halftime, but the Bearcats rallied in the third quarter to get within 55-54 heading into the fourth period.  The Blackcats outscored Christopher 31-20 in the final frame to seal the win.  Kyefer Cavins had 44 points to lead all scorers.  Jacob Towers topped Christopher with 24 points.
