Lady Cats defeat host Benton at tourney

On Monday of last week, the Goreville High School girls basketball team defeated host Benton, 55-52, to win third place at the Benton Rangerette Christmas Classic Tournament.  The Lady Blackcats completed tourney play with a 3-2 record.  Goreville’s Haley Darnell and Brittney Pritchett were both named to the all-tournament team.

Goreville led 15-8 after one quarter and had a 26-20 halftime lead.  The Lady Blackcats pushed their lead to 38-29 at the end of the third period before Benton rallied in the final frame, but Goreville held on for the victory.  Goreville’s Haley Darnell tallied 21 points and surpassed the 1,000 point mark for her career.  Benton’s Cali Carney also scored 21 points.
