The Goreville High School girls’ basketball team lost to Harrisburg, 62-50, in Saturday’s third place contest, to finish the Eldorado Mid-Winter Classic with a 3-2 record. Goreville’s Haley Darnell was named to the all-tournament team.

Harrisburg took a 25-17 first quarter lead and was ahead 41-31 at the half. The Lady Blackcats narrowed the gap to 48-42 going into the fourth quarter, but Harrisburg held on for the win. Goreville was led by Haley Darnell who scored 16 points, while Harrisburg’s Ashley Ferrell topped all scorers with 25 points.

Goreville notched its third win of the tourney on Wednesday of last week with a 68-42 victory over Gallatin County. The Lady Blackcats had a 12-10 lead after the first period before they outscored Gallatin County 19-6 in the second quarter to take a 27-16 halftime lead and Goreville stayed in control the rest of the way. Haley Darnell scored a game high 35 points, while Gallatin County’s Roderick had 15 points.

On Friday night, the Lady Blackcats lost to Mt. Carmel by the score of 63-36, to move into Saturday’s third place game. Goreville was behind 18-12 at the end of the first quarter. The Lady Aces used a big second quarter to take a 37-16 halftime lead and they remained in command the rest of the way. Haley Darnell led the Lady Blackcats with 19 points. Game high scorer honors went to Mt. Carmel’s Tyra Buss, who scored 47 points.
