Lady Cats up two at Eldorado Winter Classic tournament

Last Monday, the Goreville High School girls’ basketball team notched its second win at the Eldorado tournament by defeating Vienna, 66-57.  The Lady Blackcats trailed 11-10 after the first quarter before they came back to take a 34-27 lead at halftime.  Vienna narrowed the gap to 44-41 heading into the fourth period, but Goreville outscored the Lady Eagles 22-16 in the final frame for the win.  Haley Darnell was the game’s high scorer with 25 points, while Vienna was led by Maranda Chance, who scored 24 points.

Last Saturday, Goreville defeated Carmi-White County in their first round contest at the Eldorado Winter Classic Tournament, by the score of 58-40.  The Lady Blackcats were ahead 18-6 after the first quarter, then pushed their lead to 28-10 at the half and they stayed in command the rest of the way.  Goreville’s Haley Darnell topped all scorers with 24 points, while Combs led Carmi with 18 points.

On Wednesday of last week, the Lady Blackcats lost a BDC game at Sesser-Valier-Waltonville, by the score of 59-38.  S-V-W opened up a 28-17 halftime lead before Goreville cut the margin to 38-31 heading into the fourth quarter.  However, the Lady Devils outscored Goreville 21-7 in the final frame to seal the win.  Haley Darnell led Goreville with 15 points, while S-V-W’s Rachel Marlo was the game’s top scorer with 20 points.

The Lady Blackcats returned to the win column on the next night, with a 63-37 victory over Elverado at Goreville.  Goreville had a 22-14 first quarter lead, then took control in the second period, outscoring the Lady Falcons 12-4, for a 34-18 halftime advantage.  Haley Darnell paced Goreville with 18 points.  Elverado’s Cheyenne Abbadusky led all scorers with 21 points.
