Lady Cats advance to Sectional finals

The Goreville Lady Blackcats defeated Gallatin County and Pope County to win their IHSA Regional last week.  The Lady Cats next defeated Cobden 76-51 in the semifinals of the Trico Class 1A girls basketball sectional Monday evening.  The Lady Cats now head to sectional finals for the fourth straight year and will play the winner of Tuesday’s game between Wayne City and Cairo at 7 p.m. Thursday.  ~ photo provided

On Monday night, the Goreville High School girls basketball team defeated Cobden in the opening round of the Trico sectional by the score of 76-51.  With the win the Lady Blackcats advance to the sectional championship contest Thursday at 7 p.m. against either Wayne City or Cairo.  The winner of that game will move onto the Salem Supersectional for a Monday night (Feb. 24) contest at 6 p.m.

Haley Darnell led all scorers with 37 points, while Cobden’s Taylor Tomazzoli had 21 for the Lady Appleknockers.

The Lady Blackcats began post-season play at the Pope County regional on Tuesday of last week with a 73-34 win over Gallatin County.  Goreville started fast, taking a 23-6 first quarter lead and opening a 37-14 lead at the half and the Lady Blackcats stayed in control the rest of the way.  Haley Darnell scored 21 points to lead all scorers, while Smith had 10 points for Gallatin County.

On Friday, Goreville won the Pope County regional championship by defeating the host Lady Pirates, 51-18.

Against Pope County, the Lady Blackcats took control early, outscoring the Lady Pirates 16-1 in the first quarter and holding a 28-7 halftime lead.  Goreville’s Haley Darnell led all scorers with 17 points.
