Lady Cats defeat Vienna, Zeigler-Royalton on the road
Coach Mike Helton reaches 400th career victory

On Wednesday of last week, the Goreville High School girls’ basketball team defeated Vienna, 71-45, at Vienna. The Lady Blackcats jumped out to a 24-12 first quarter, but by halftime, Vienna had narrowed the margin to 35-29. Goreville then outscored the Lady Eagles 14-6 in the third quarter to take a 49-35 lead into the fourth period and they remained in control the rest of the way. Goreville’s Haley Darnell was the game high scorer with 27 points, while Jami Shipley led Vienna with 12 points.

On Thursday night, the Lady Blackcats traveled to Zeigler-Royalton, where Goreville defeated the Lady Tornadoes, 46-33, giving coach Mike Helton his 400th career victory. Goreville led 16-10 after the first quarter, then steadily pulled away for the win. Goreville’s Haley Darnell led all scorers with 30 points. Z-R was paced by Autumn Gunter, who scored 11 points.

Last Saturday, Goreville notched a BDC win at Trico, by the score of 52-38. The Lady Blackcats led 17-14 at halftime, then pushed their lead to 33-23 at the start of the fourth quarter. Goreville’s Haley Darnell took game high scorer honors with 24 points, while Trico’s Prange had 18 points.
