The Goreville Lady Blackcats defeated Wayne City in overtime 41-40 Thursday evening in the Trico Class 1A Sectional tournament claiming their fourth straight IHSA Sectional Championship, which makes them one of only eight teams still playing for a State title.

Haley Darnell scored the game-winning basket with only seven seconds left on the clock as Wayne City had led the overtime period up until that point.

“My teammates did a great job of spreading the floor at the end,” Darnell is quoted saying in the Southern. “I just got a lane to the basket and the shot went down.”

The team received a police and fire truck escort upon their arrival back in Goreville Thursday night with sirens and lights alerting the Village of their success.

The Lady Blackcats will next face Moweaqua Central A&M, the 62-57 winner over Arcola in the Toledo Cumberland Sectional, at the IHSA Salem Supersectional on Monday, February 24 at Salem High School with a game time of 6 p.m.

Tickets for Monday’s game are being sold in the Goreville High School Office Friday and Monday.
