Blackcats claim Class 1A Regional title in home victory

The Goreville High School boys’ basketball team won its own Class 1A regional tournament last Friday with an 81-69 victory over Zeigler-Royalton.  The win moves the Blackcats into the NCOE sectional for a Tuesday night contest.  The sectional championship is set for Friday at 7 p.m.

Goreville had a 13-9 first quarter lead which they extended to 36-24 at the half.  The Blackcats used a big third quarter, outscoring Z-R 28-19, to take a 64-43 lead heading into the final frame.  Goreville’s Kyefer Cavins scored his 1,000th career in the third period.   Zeke Snell led Goreville with 27 points, while Z-R’s Bailey Schimpf also scored 27 points.

Scoring for Goreville: Snell-27; Lanham-20; Cavins-15; Vaughn-8; Messmer-6; Melot-4; Madden-1.

The Blackcats breezed to a 94-69 win over Steeleville on Wednesday night in regional semi-final action.  Zeke  Snell scored 37 points and Kyefer Cavins had 30 points for Goreville.  Steeleville was led by Jeffers who scored 30 points.
